PPWR compliance through integrated packaging tracking

Back to all Case Studies

The Problem

The new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) introduces stricter requirements for shipping packaging, including void space optimization, recyclability, and documentation obligations. For many shipping and e-commerce retailers, this means additional investment in suitable packaging, adjustments to existing IT systems, and new compliance and reporting processes — along with higher operating costs across the shipping chain. Small and medium-sized mail-order companies are often more affected, as they typically have fewer resources available for these technical and procedural changes.

We developed a digital packaging tracking system that integrates with existing ERP and merchandise management systems to record packaging used in the shipping process. Each packaging unit is linked to relevant information — material type, weight, recyclability, and the associated order. This data is stored centrally and processed to support evaluation and analysis, giving companies visibility into their packaging flows. From this data, PPWR-relevant metrics can be calculated and documented, and companies can identify potential areas for optimization in material usage, packaging design, and process costs.

Measurable Impact

By extending the existing shipping process — particularly shipping label generation — customers can work toward PPWR (EU 2025/40) compliance with limited additional operational effort. Packaging data relevant for regulatory purposes is captured and processed in the background, which can reduce the need for manual data entry and lower the effort involved in documentation. This also supports better data quality and traceability for regulatory reporting. The goal is a scalable approach to PPWR compliance that fits within companies' existing shipping processes, rather than replacing them.
